Grant Agreements to 34 Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in the Governorates of Irbid and Mafraq and Zarqa

UNDP Jordan celebrated today, the signing grant agreements to 34 community based organizations (CBOs) in the governorates of Irbid and Mafraq and Zarqa with a total given amount of US $ 1.3 million.

Those community grants come within the project the “social cohesion and stability programme” project UNDP is implementing in the host communities, which is supported by the government of Japan, government of Kuwait and the Swiss Agency for Development& Cooperation. The programme particularly focuses on Jordanian hosting communities in the governorates of Irbid, Zarqa, Maan, Mafraq and Tafileh. This program aims to enhance social cohesion &stability through implementing targeted development initiatives and programs in partnership with community based organizations operating in the local communities.

The project targeted 34 community based organizations, in which 180 applicants of various age groups participated from the three governorates: Irbid, Mafraq, and Zarqa. UNDP selected them based on a particular selection to receive a financial grant that contributes to support social cohesion, by building the capacities of those CBOs, through the implementing partner Development Business Center” to increase their effectiveness in the area of civil peace building and stability.

In her welcome note, Dr. Zena Ali Ahmad, UNDP Country Director congratulated the selected CBOs to carry out the development activities. She said that "this project is part of the whole comprehensive programms “mitigate the impact of the Syria Crisis on Jordanian host communities " UNDP is implementing since 2013. Thank you to the support of donors and government of Jordan who helped UNDP to elaborate this integrated comprehensive programme to support communities in responding to the challenges posed by the influx of the Syrian refugees and increasing pressures on the Jordanian host communities.

The Secretary General of Ministry of Interior, Mr. Samir Mubaidin praised the partnership between the Ministry of Interior any UNDP in supporting the local communities and promote social cohesion. He also thanked the donors especially of Japan, Swiss, Kuwait and Jordan government for supporting such social development programs which helps in reducing the burden of Syrian crisis on Jordanian host communities.

His excellency the Japanese ambassador said” I would like to give my special appreciation to UNDP for its effort to organize this event and its continuous dedication in the field of supporting social cohesion and peace stability”.

He added that in 2016, the government of Japan provided fund for UNDP different projects in the host communities, with an amount of the grant provided for the project was approximately 13 million USD.

Thanks to this Swiss-supported programme, today there are more than 180 members of community-based organizations who are in a better position to promote social cohesion and acceptance in Jordan”, Manuel Etter, Regional Head of Cooperation, Swiss Cooperation Office Amman, Embassy of Switzerland said.

Engineer Omar Shuqom, board member of the Business Development center, said, "We are witnessing a qualitative addition to real development through the integrated program: Support for social cohesion and peace stability which was designed by UNDP Jordan, which the implementation of Business Development Center to provide training courses for the CBOs.

At the end of the ceremony, UNDP handed certificates to the CBOs and beneficiaries of the civil society s that have been providing financial grants to them.
