Canadian Ambassador Visits Al-Ekeider Landfill

The Canadian Ambassador Peter MacDougall, visited Al-Ekeider landfill to check the progress of "rehabilitation of Al-Ekeider landfill” project, which is implemented by UNDP Jordan in partnership with the Ministry of Municipalities, with generous donation of the Government of Canada.

This project came an emergency response from UNDP, with support from the Canadian government, by launching a project on Improving Solid Waste Management and Income Creation in Host Communities (Rehabilitation of Al Akedir Landfill).

 

This project’s activities include constructing a modern, technically-engineered, sanitary landfill cell in the free remaining airspace at the current landfill area; at this stage in order to provide a short term operational capacity for a minimum of 2 years of waste disposal. Basically, a total area of 52,000 m2 is will be utilized as the new landfill cell.

 

The main objective of the project is to immediately address increasing problem of solid waste disposal & treatment at Al Ekaider (involving intensive labor schemes & innovative solutions

 

The project also aims at strengthening the capabilities of MoMA and JSC in Irbid to enhance capacity for service delivery, emergency response. In addition to exploring employment creation opportunities.

 

The delegation toured the site and check on the progress on the different achieved & in process components, especially:

  • The Infra-structure (Buildings, workshop, road, street lighting, green belt)
  • Emergency Cell & Transfer Stations (ESIA, Design, Supervision, & Implementation)
  • Machinery Procurement & Maintenance
  • Capacity Building of Staff
  • Livelihoods Support and Value-Chain Activities
