Machinery & Equipment Hand Over in Al-Akeider Landfill

Apr 5, 2016

keys handover of the machinery (Canadian Ambassador, Minister of Municipal Affairs, UNDP CD)

With support of the Government of Canada; 13 heavy machineries were delivered to Al-Akeider Landfill in a huge ceremony. This activity comes under the framework of “improving solid waste management and income generation in host communities for refugees project” implemented by UNDP Jordan in partnership with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs (MoMA).

The project falls under solid waste management (SWM) priorities of the Jordan Response Plan (JRP), as well as responds to the national strategy to rehabilitate Al-Ekider Landfill of 2014.

UNDP & MoMA with support of Canada aim through this joint project to:

  1. Immediately address the increasing problem of solid waste disposal and treatment at the Al-Ekider landfill while integrating labour-intensive schemes using innovative solutions that will engage more people in recycling, composting and other waste treatment-related activities;
  2. Strengthen the capabilities of MoMA and the Joint Services Council in Irbid in the solid waste management sector for enhanced capacity of service delivery, emergency response, and local economic development.

For this reason; UNDP procured 13 specialized heavy duty machineries and equipment, necessary for implementing the appropriate international standards and practices of municipal solid waste sanitary waste disposal operations to be carried out at the new constructed cell in the landfill site. This comes timely to support the already-burdened equipment and fleet at site, and to cope with the increasing flow of solid waste on daily basis.

Machineries procured are based on real-time assessment that aims to rapidly respond to the current needs at Al-Ekedir landfill, and in coordination with international agencies that work in support to SWM.
