Launch of the National Workshop on Climate ChangeFeb 16, 2016
Following Paris Agreement; UNDP Jordan in cooperation & collaboration with the Ministry of Environment; organized the first national workshop on climate change entitled " From Paris to Amman".
Representatives of different sectors including public, private and civil discussed how to capitalise on the recently adopted Paris Agreement and the financing opportunities it presents.
Environment Minister Taher Shakhshir said during the opening session that the Paris Agreement is important for the Kingdom, highlighting that the Kingdom is already suffering from the impact of climate change on its natural resources, the minister noted that regional turmoil is adding further strains on these resources as the population increased by 20 per cent over the past three years.
Dr. Zena Ali-Ahmad, UNDP Country Director, stressed that plans and programmes should not only focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also boost the capabilities of developing countries and help them in adapting to climate change.
She also emphasized UNDP's readiness to assist Jordan in keeping up with its commitments towards the new global agreement, noting that the UN agency is willing to provide and facilitate funding as well as technical and technological assistance to integrate climate change in the Kingdom's priorities and policies.
