Evaluation of "Mitigating the Impact of the Syrian Refugee Crisis" at the Annual Steering Committee MeetingMar 31, 2015
To evaluate the impact and lessons learnt of "Mitigating the Impact of the Syrian Refugee Crisis on the Jordanian Vulnerable Host Communities Project", UNDP Jordan held its Annual Steering Committee Meeting at the Marriott Hotel on 31 March 2015. The steering committee comprises of representatives from the Ministry Interior, Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the private sector. Beneficiaries from the project also attended the meeting to shed light on how the project had positively touched their lives in light of the increased Syrian refugees influx and the impact on Jordanian host communities.
Raed Al Adwan Head of the Local Development Directorate at the Ministry of Interior commented on the cooperation of the Ministry with UNDP by saying:" Proud of this partnership with UNDP, one of the first international organizations concerned with the influx of refugees and its impact. We at the Ministry of Interior are facilitators of knowledge to the staff of local development units and our partnership with UNDP is a daily occurrence that we are pleased with its outputs."
Nadia Al Awamleh Socio-Economic Portfolio Analyst at UNDP Jordan presented the outline of the project, achievements and lessons learnt. She explained the rationale behind the project and UNDP's pioneering role by indicating:" At the time where all support was extended to Syrian refugees only, UNDP submitted the project document of mitigating the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on the Jordanian host communities to the donors and the Jordanian Government in mid 2013."
To present real cases of beneficiaries and the project's achievements, Nabila Bani Ayesh a beneficiary gave a brief about her business and encouraged all girls and women to enroll in UNDP's project different components to mitigate the impact of the Syrian Refugee Crisis on hosting communities. She also had the chance to showcase her dairy products which were served as hospitality to Dr. Zena Ali Ahmad the Country Director at UNDP Jordan and a number of high level officials from the Ministries of Interior and Municipal Affairs.
As part of developing sustainable pathways, UNDP focuses on improving the resource endowments of the poor and boost their prospects for employment and livelihoods. Two projects in specific "Mitigating the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Jordanian vulnerable host communities" operates with an ultimate goal of sustaining social and economic stability. The project contributes to job creation, and building entrepreneurship skills while encouraging and supporting the establishment of microbusinesses. UNDP is also supporting local governance structures to provide adequate services through the provision of equipment and material, rehabilitation and upgrading of infrastructure.
