Under the patronage of the Minister of Municipalities Affaires, Engineer Waleed al Masri, UNDP and Japan Embassy handed over new solid waste compactors to Mafraq and Irbid governorates; specifically to Sabha and Al Dafyaneh, Um Jmal, AL-Salheyah and al Mafraq Municipalities located in Mafraq governorate and in Al Ramtha, Irbid municipalities located in Irbid governorate.  The ceremony took place in Sabha and al Dafyaneh municipality in Mafraq on Tuesday, August 26. Attended the event; Ambassador of Japan, UNDP country Director, Mafraq and Irbid Governors and Director of the Local development directorate in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The handover of the solid waste compactors comes under the framework of  the "Mitigating the Impact of the Syrian Refugee Crisis on Jordanian Vulnerable Host Communities" project  through which UNDP is implementing several activities with the support from the government of Japan, focusing on improving municipal services and infrastructure, vocational training and micro-entrepreneurship development in the northern areas which are the most affected by the flow of the Syrian refugees.

The newly received compactors will help municipalities to reduce the exacerbating effects of the solid waste problems that clearly impact the infrastructure and municipal services. The United Nations Development Programme and in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs carried out needs assessment of the targeted municipalities and accordingly decided to contract for the purchase of the necessary mechanisms to support the municipality in its efforts to contain the crisis waste as much as possible

UNDP has previously distributed spray and fogging mechanisms to 36 municipalities funded by the Japan government as an attempt to eliminate insects and rodents in large municipalities.

More similar handovers of 12 compactors to other municipalities in northern Jordan will follow this event with the support from the Swiss Development Cooperation.
