UNDP welcomed on Sunday H.E the Ambassador Manuel Bessler, Humanitarian Aid Delegate of the Swiss Confederation, undertaking an official visit to the Municipality of Al Sarhan, where two rounds of UNDP-leaded vocational training programme are taking place, under the “Mitigating the Impact of the Syrian Refugee Crisis on the vulnerable Jordanian Host Communities" project.

The Ambassador’s visit comes as part of his tour of the Jordanian host communities and Za’atari Camp in Northern Governorates, where UNDP is implementing activities funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), among other project donors. Such activities target areas where vulnerable people are under stress as a result of the Syrian crisis. The project includes vocational training addressed mainly to youth, and supports municipalities to assist them in delivering basic services.

As part of the activities funded out of the 2 million USD granted by SDC within the framework of the project, vocational training programmes help relief increased pressure on municipalities, with regards to enhancing employment opportunities in host communities.

“I am gaining life skills, building a stronger personality, and already abandoned the fear that I would not be able find a job.” Twenty-years old Islam Al Sarhan started last week the one-month Assembly line vocational training in Al Sarhan, where she is being taught sewing. The beneficiary described the added value of such vocational training programme in remote areas, where women don’t usually move out of their villages for training or work opportunities. “I thank UNDP and its partners for this opportunity. Even if I won’t be appointed for a job, I am happy to have had the possibility to improve my personal capacity”, she adds.

During the visit, HE Ambassador Bessler was accompanied by H.E the Swiss Ambassador to Jordan, senior officials from SDC and UNDP, HE Ali Al Sarhan, Mayor of Al Sarhan, and HE Nayef Al Bakhit, COE of the Mafraq Development Corporation.
