    Arab States Seek Agreement on Reducing Risk

    Aqaba – More than 250 Representatives from the Arab States region gather today in Jordan for three days to agree on a common Arab position on the region’s input to the international framework for disaster risk reduction which will be agreed at the 2015 World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. The 1st Arab Regional Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction is being held under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, President of the Royal Scientific Society.

    It is with heartfelt enthusiasm I join this historic event that Jordan is witnessing today. Jordan is writing history and our gathering here at the Dead Sea illustrates Jordan’s leadership and the Government’s commitment to finding a lasting and comprehensive solution to the human and socio-economic problems caused by landmines. Jordan today is the first country in the Middle East to declare itself free of mines in 2012 as per the deadline set by the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty.

    United Nations Global Compact Awareness Workshop

    A Global Compact Awareness Seminar was held on Monday, December 19th at UNDP premises. Ms. Majida Al Assaf, the poverty Analyst at the UNDP gave the opening speech and Mr. Walid Naji, the Regional Network Manager - MENA and Europe at the Global Compact office, presented the attendees with an overview of the initiative and how different entities: private sector, civil society, educational institutions can be part of this global initiative .In addition he gave a session on reporting and the main topics for presenting a Communication on Progress report. Current members in the local network also gave presentations; Mr. Raji Hattar the Chief Sustainability & Compliance Officer at Aramex gave a presentation on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), its role in supporting development in the country. Ms.Yasmeen Al Habra from Naouri Group gave a presentation on Naouri Group achievements regarding the Global Compact and their activities as members. With more than 5,200 participating businesses in over than 130 countries, the Global Compact is the world’s largest voluntary corporate responsibility initiative. There are currently 32 members from Jordan including leading companies such as Aramex, Naouri Group, Jordan Aviation, Royal Jordanian, Idea JWT and others
