  • Saving the corals

    The most significant feature of Jordan’s marine environment is the coral reef ecosystems. Reefs in Jordan are among the most threatened in the Red Sea because they are shallow, easily accessible, and adjacent to a major population and industrial centre. Following the recommendations made by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Master Plan, local authorities in Aqaba decided to close port operations at the Main Port, and to relocate the services to the southernmost tip of coastline in an area locally known as Dirreh Bay.

    37 years old Laith Smadi was an employee at a small desserts shop in a small town in Ajloun governorate. Through the project “Promoting Local Economic Development in Jordan” (PLEDJ) in Ajloun which is funded by the European Delegation to Jordan, he received a small grant for his eco-friendly business idea. With the grant, he managed to run Ajloun Forest Reserve Restaurant alone buying one knife at a time.

  • UNDP Jordan supports the Ministry of tourism & Antiquities to take the first step towards tourism transition into green economy

    One of the new initiatives UNDP Jordan will implement is establishing a Tourism Green Unit (TGU) in the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquity (MOTA), which will be done through “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation in Tourism Sector Development in Jordan (BITS) project”, supported by Global Environment Facility (GEF)

  • UNDP and PDTRA establish an early warning system for flash floods

    The United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) launched on August 20th an "Early Warning System for Flash Floods" in Petra and Wadi Mousa. The launch comes as part of UNDP’s support to the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) in the domain of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation and represents an attempt to mainstream Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) capacities in local development initiatives. The project was funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and cost shared by the Government of Jordan and PDTRA.

    While women in many rural areas in Jordan are still practicing the traditional ways of home food processing, a group of ambitious local women in Ebbin - Ajloun, are working hard to turn this process into a standardized system benefitting from the small grant Fatima Al-Momani, head of the association was awarded through the “Promoting Local Economic Development in Jordan” (PLEDJ) which is funded by the European Delegation in Jordan.

    In a workshop that is based close to the main market area in the city of Ajloun, a group of local women from different ages has been gathering together every day to get a professional training in embroidery using brand new machines that are dedicated to this art.
